Gustavo Dudamel receives the title ‘Amic de Barcelona’

The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, awarded the honorary title in recognition of the conductor’s work for equality and against poverty, as well as his musical excellence and ties with the city.

Dudamel will be directing the second free ‘Classics at the Beach’ concert on Friday, 12 July, accompanied by the choir from El Liceu. The concert is part of the Cultural Regatta, the programme of activities to go with the city hosting the America’s Cup.

Gustavo Dudamel

Gustavo Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, in 1981. He was named as the musical director of the Simón Bolivar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in 1999, at the age of 18. In 2004 he won the opening Bamberger Symphoniker – Mahler Competition and gained international fame.

The conductor created the Fundación Dudamel in 2012, the goal being to give broader access to music and the arts by offering tools and opportunities to children and young people.

He is currently the director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.
