Nearly 50,000 cubic metres of extra sand to protect the beaches

The recovery of sand from works along the coast will allow 40,000 cubic metres to be added to the Sant Sebastià beach and 8,000 cubic metres to the Llevant and Mar Bella beaches. Part of the Pla Clima, the idea is to protect these spaces against maritime storms.

The city’s beaches lose 30,000 cubic metres of sand every year and in some cases this means the protection of the coast cannot be guaranteed and there is not enough space to locate services.

Now, the sand regained from works will be used to strengthen some of the most damaged points:

The construction of the BSM car park at the former fish market as part of the Ciutadella del Coneixement knowledge hub generated 40,000 cubic metres of sand that will go to the Sant Sebastià beach. The proximity between the works and the beach, some two kilometres, will also minimise the environmental impact of the transfer. The process will be carried out through collaboration between Port de Barcelona and BSM and should take two months.

The work on the new Districlima cooling centre at El Bogatell will allow 8,000 cubic metres of sand to be distributed between the Llevant beach, one of the spaces hit hardest by maritime storms, and the Mar Bella beach, a critical point in terms of beach erosion. The process will take two months.
