Health. The CAP Barceloneta has five new consultation rooms and renovated spaces.

The Barceloneta primary healthcare centre (CAP) has been provisionally enlarged to add five new consultation rooms and revamped spaces to provide better support for local people until the new facility opens, which should be in 2030.

The work has added 130 square metres of newly built space and renovated 100 square metres of space inside, adding five new consultation rooms and revamping meeting rooms, the office and other spaces. The project used an annexed site, reclassified for facilities, and aims to respond to the healthcare needs of the neighbourhood until the new CAP becomes operative.

The future centre, to be built in the former Clínica Barceloneta and three adjacent houses in C/ Pescadors, will have 3,300 square metres of floor space, tripling the current space and doubling the number of consultation rooms. With a budget of more than 9 million euros, the project includes 32 consultation rooms, treatment rooms, blood sample booths and spaces for communal activities. It will also conserve the original façades, including the birthplace of Hilari Salvadó, Barcelona’s last republican mayor, where a commemorative plaque is due to be installed.

The work is a step forward for the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council in improving primary healthcare, a priority set out in the City Agreement 2023 and validated by the Mixed Commission of the two institutions. The new facility will provide service for more than 15,800 people and help broaden the range of services, strengthening comprehensive healthcare support for a neighbourhood with a well-established community life.

To make the project possible, the City Council acquired the building and the adjacent homes in 2024 for 8 million euros, granting use to the Catalan Health Service. This investment responds to a long-standing demand by local people and consolidates the institutional commitment to health and well-being in Barceloneta.
