Barcelona is famous around the world for its Modernista architecture, one of the symbols that define the city's identity. What is not so well known, however, is that the architecture from that period which has survived to this day is but a tiny sample of the great Modernista Barcelona that existed at the end of the 19th century and start of the early 20th, since when a large number of Modernista buildings have been pulled down. This book revives the memory of these lost elements of Barcelona's Eixample, a new sector, between the city's historical centre and the old municipalities on the Barcelona plain, urbanised almost in parallel to the explosion of the Modernista building and where a good many of the movement's master works were built. Some hundred buildings and establishments are rescued from oblivion here, split between the district's two main arteries, Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, and the neighbourhoods that extend either side of them, to the right and left of the Eixample.
