Sport is part of the city’s history. It was present in the programme of the two events that went to transform the city: the international exhibitions of 1888 and 1929. Barcelona has also been the forerunner in Spain for sports venues: the Palau d’Esports in Carrer Lleida, Camp Nou and the Palau Sant Jordi. For over a hundred and fifty years the city has organised numerous official sports competitions such as world and European championships, as well as more unusual events like the Mediterranean Games, the Dakar Rally, the Tour de France and the X Games.
