With photographs by Xavier Martí Alavedra and text by Josep Maria Cadena, this book is an outstanding testimony to a unique place in Barcelona’s recent history: the Meridiana greyhound stadium, the last of its kind in Spain. It was opened in 1964 in the Congrés neighbourhood and in the same year was awarded the FAD prize for architecture from the Foment de les Arts i el Disseny. Up until 2006 it continued to open its doors to greyhound racing enthusiasts who frequented the Meridian stadium to enjoy the sport, meet up with friends and also have a flutter. Xavier Martí’s virtually clandestine pictures beautifully capture the spirit and atmosphere of the stadium –photography was forbidden here. His images pulsate with life and speak to us of a time past but also of the present; the longings, fears, disappointments and joys that they depict are a timeless part of human nature everywhere.
