Safety and prevention. One of the priorities is to tackle cases where people refuse to take breathalyser or drug-driving tests when obliged to do so, as well as all other conduct that poses risks.

In an effort to combat the dangers of drink-driving and drug-driving, the City Police are running a citywide enforcement campaign from Thursday, 8 February, to Tuesday, 14 February, as part of the municipal road safety plan.

The goal is to cut the number of accidents and victims alike, and more specifically to prevent and detect as many drivers as possible who test positive for drink or drug driving, adopting the appropriate enforcement measures.

The campaign will focus on infringements linked to driving or riding while over the legal alcohol limit or while under the influence of drugs, refusing to take breathalyser and drug-driving tests when obliged to do so, and in general, any other conduct that poses risks.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the main risk factors for accidents, and preventive checks are one of the most efficient ways of avoiding the circulation of drivers and riders potentially at risk of accidents. According to the accident figures from the City Police for 2023, this was the main indirect cause of accidents last year (contributed to an accident but was not the main cause). The influence that alcohol and drugs have in terms of reckless driving was actually the main topic for the last Barcelona Road Safety Forum.

Cutting the number of accidents is one of the goals of the Local Road Safety Plan, as well as the Road Safety Strategy 2030. The latter aims to halve the number of road deaths and serious injuries by this date, with a view to reaching zero mortalities by 2050.
