Trinh T. Minh-ha’s second film, a lyrical meditation that challenges and redefines the perspective and politics of ethnographic cinema. Session part of the retrospective dedicated to the feminist and decolonialist scholar that accompanies the exhibition Seen Yet Unseen.
Filmed with stunning elegance and clarity, Naked Spaces - Living is Round explores the rhythms of life and rituals in rural settings across six West African countries (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Senegal). The film’s non-linear structure challenges the traditions of ethnographic cinema, while its evocative images and sounds lyrically lead the viewer through the most inaccessible corners of the African continent: the interaction of people in their living spaces.
