Work gets under way on Barcelona’s climate control plan in 24 schools
The first stage of the school climate control project gets under way to improve air quality and temperatures in schools, with work at 24 centres in eight city districts. The work will be carried out over the summer, when there are no classes, and entail the installation of aerothermal systems and solar panelling.
First package in the Barcelona School Climate Plan
With an investment of 14,160,000 euros from funds generated by the tourist tax, the first package of measures in the climate control plan, the del Pla Clima Escola Barcelona, have a twofold aim; to improve air quality in schools and temperatures for students and staff in the hottest and coldest months of the year. This way, the city’s schools will also be doing their bit in the decarbonisation process by using more efficient and sustainable energy systems.
The work begins with the removal of gas heating systems and the installation of dome-controlled aerothermal equipment. The rooftops of 23 schools will also get solar panelling, which will cover their own energy needs and at some points generate surplus power that can go into the power network or supply other schools.
This first stage of the project is expected to benefit some 8,300 students, plus 700 members of staff working at the schools in question.
The 24 schools in the first stage of the project are:
- Ciutat Vella: Escola Drassanes and Escola Mediterrània
- L’Eixample: Escola Fructuós Gelabert, Escola Encants, Escola Els Llorers, Escola Fort Pienc and Escola Mallorca
- Les Corts: Escola Anglesola
- Sarrià – Sant Gervasi: CEE Municipal Vil·la Joana
- Gràcia: Escola Josep Maria Segarra and Escola L’Univers
- Horta-Guinardó: CEE La Ginesta
- Sant Andreu: facility from the former Escola Ramon y Cajal, Escola Can Fabra, Escola Eulàlia Bota, Escola Ignasi Iglésias and Escola La Maquinista
- Sant Martí: Escola Fluvià, Escola La Mar Bella, Escola L’Arc de Sant Martí, Escola Pere IV, Escola Provençals, Escola Sant Martí and Escola La Llacuna del Poblenou
170 climate-controlled schools in six years
The overall goal of the plan is for 170 municipally operated schools in the city to get transformed climate control systems in the next six years. In all, 100 million euros will be invested to install 30,000 square metres of solar panels and improve temperatures and air quality to benefit some 55,000 students.
