Barcelona promotes a new anti-racist political agenda for Europe led by cities
Barcelona consolidates its position as a European benchmark in the defense of democratic values, coexistence and diversity.
The European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR) has voted in favour of Sara Belbeida, the Commissioner for Citizen Relations and Cultural and Religious Diversity, to serve as vice-president of the organisation for the next five years.
The nomination was made during the ECCAR General Assembly in Zurich, where Barcelona was once again voted to remain on the network’s Steering Committee alongside 25 other cities, including Berlin, Bologna, Oslo, and Malmö.
As vice-president, Sara Belbeida will promote cities as key actors in defining European public policies on equality and human rights, promoting a common agenda against racism that strengthens cooperation between municipalities and European institutions.
By taking this step, Barcelona reinforces the commitment expressed by Mayor Jaume Collboni before UNESCO in his call for a Global Alliance Against Racism and consolidates its position as a European leader in the defence of democratic values, coexistence, and diversity.
In this context, Barcelona is developing the first, 2025-2035, Barcelona Anti-Racist Plan at the municipal level, which aims to be an international model in addressing racism, incorporating an anti-racist perspective into the administration and becoming an active agent in achieving a more diverse, fair, and equal society.
