More safe routes and expanded night-time mediation service

This summer, the safe routes, coordinated by the Barcelona City Police, are being strengthened with the addition of sixteen auxiliary staff. Their role is to support the service and help maintain order and safety in public spaces, particularly in areas with a high concentration of night-time activity.

Every Saturday in August, and on at least the first two Saturdays in September, the additional teams will be on the streets from midnight until 7:00 a.m. as part of a pilot scheme designed to evaluate the service’s effectiveness. The initiative is one of the commitments set out in the government measure “Initiatives for the Integrated Management of the Night 2025–2027”, led by the Night Office.

Teams, operating in pairs or groups of four and clearly identifiable to the public, act as visible and reassuring figures. They promote civic behaviour, support community harmony, and help prevent sexual violence. They also provide basic information and guidance, can accompany vulnerable individuals to safe areas, and alert the City Police or emergency services if they detect risks or incidents. While they have no legal authority to detain or issue penalties, they are trained to offer basic assistance, first aid, and emotional support.

The new safe zones are located in:

  • Plaça Reial – Liceu Metro: 2 staff
  • Plaça Reial – Drassanes Metro: 2 staff
  • Seafront – Ciutadella–Vila Olímpica Metro: 4 staff
  • Leisure Triangle – Marina Metro: 2 staff
  • Leisure Triangle – Bogatell Metro: 2 staff
  • Poble Espanyol – Espanya Metro: 4 staff

At the end of the pilot period, the City Council will assess whether to extend the service based on the number of interactions, referrals to the 112 emergency number, and incidents recorded. Alongside these routes, the City Police will continue its regular patrols in other key areas of the city such as Paral·lel and Carrer de Tuset, as well as at major events including neighbourhood festivals, music festivals, New Year’s Eve, and the Sant Joan celebrations.

Night-time mediation service

From mid-August, the night-time mediation service will expand from six to eight mediators. These trained professionals work to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts that may arise during the night and early morning in nightlife districts and public spaces. They operate in pairs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Preventing sexual violence

Both the safe routes and the night-time mediation service are further supported by the Purple Points initiative and the We Don’t Keep Quiet protocol, two complementary municipal strategies already in place.

Until 24 September, two Purple Points will operate along the seafront from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and pre-holiday nights. The We Don’t Keep Quiet protocol, agreed with the city’s leading venues, festivals, and nightlife operators, provides an additional framework for preventing sexual harassment and gender-based violence in these settings.
