City Council. Municipal management got the highest rating in the last six years, at 47%.
The first set of results from the Barcelona Barometer 2024 show members of the public give a good rating to municipal management over the last year, with the highest score in the last six years. Insecurity, access to housing and the impact of tourism are the main concerns among people, while cleaning drops to fourth place. The figures are based on the opinions of more than 800 people in Barcelona, surveyed between 25 June and 4 July 2024.
The Barcelona Barometer is a municipal survey published twice a year, in July and December, showing the main concerns and patterns in the opinions of the Barcelona population.
The full results of the first part of the Barometer 2024 can be found in the municipal documentary repository BCNROC. This is a summary of the main points:
Municipal management
Some 47% of those surveyed value municipal management positively, up 4.5 points compared to last year and the highest rating in the last six years, while 12.3% of people consider it to be regular. Negative opinions account for 36.8% of the total, while 3.9% of those surveyed did not state their position.
Image of the city and economic situation
Of those surveyed, 42% believe that the image of the city has improved or is the same as last year, while 55% believe it has become worse. As for future perspectives, people are optimistic: 48.2% believe that the situation will improve. In contrast, 37% feel negative about the evolution of the city in the future.
As for the city economy, 45.2% of those surveyed think the current situation is good or very good, compared to 39.3% who see it as negative. The majority opinion about the future is positive: some 48.4% believe things will improve, while 29.6% think they will get worse.
Main concerns
Safety continues to be the issue that most concerns people in Barcelona: 27.2% of those surveyed state that this is the most serious problem the city needs to tackle. The list of issues that concern people continues with access to housing (16.6%), tourism (13%), up respectively by 4.9 and 6.7 points compared to last time. In contrast, cleaning drops by nearly 5% to stand in fourth place, with 5%, thanks to the rollout of the new cleaning contract and the Pla Endreça.
Public approval for different measures
As with the last edition, the survey asks about current matters and measures which are important in the city. Some 74.9% approve of the municipal measures to eliminate tourist lets in 2028, while 14% are against it. The approval of the by-law increasing fines for anti-social behaviour is backed by 85.8% of those surveyed, while nearly one in seven (68.9%) are in favour of connecting the two tram systems in Av. Diagonal.
Most people living in Barcelona (77.5%) are aware that the city is hosting the America’s Cup and 57.4% of those surveyed feel it will be quite beneficial or highly beneficial for the city.
Scores for political leaders
People in Barcelona rated the heads of political formations, who gained the following scores:
- Xavier Trias: 5.1
- Jaume Collboni: 4.9
- Elisenda Alamany: 4.7
- Ada Colau: 4.4
- Daniel Sierra: 2.9
- Gonzalo de Oro-Pulido: 1.9
Voting intentions
According to the data gathered, if elections were held now the results would be as follows:
- PSC-PSOE: 17.2%
- Barcelona en Comú: 10.8%
- ERC: 9.7%
- Trias per Barcelona / Junts: 7.3%
- CUP: 3.3%
- PP: 2.6%
- Vox: 1.1%
Other voting options account for 2%, with 1.2% of those surveyed stating they would cast null or void votes. Abstention came out at 14.5%, while 30.4% of people said they were unsure about their preferences.
