Municipal commitment in the fight against inequalities and child poverty

03/03/2021 - 16:21

The city signs an agreement giving its backing to the Zero Child Poverty Country Alliance, guaranteeing the municipal commitment to quality inclusive education. In addition, as part of the Neighbourhood Plan, the programme to take on social educators is also being expanded to 41 city schools. The programme will also now be extended to nursery schools, with five social educators to join education teams.

The social and health crisis caused by Covid-19 has made life conditions worse for many children. In Barcelona alone, between 12,000 and 18,000 children have slipped below the poverty line and an estimated 37.5% of minors in the city are in a situation of moderate poverty.

Barcelona is the first city to add its weight to this alliance, consolidating the firm municipal commitment in the fight against inequalities and child poverty. By signing, the City Council assumes the challenges of guaranteeing quality inclusive education, generating safe and healthy environments, favouring a healthy and balanced diet, promoting young children’s participation and fostering equality.

More social educators

As part of the Neighbourhood Plan, the programme to take on social educators at publicly run schools is being extended in 23 neighbourhoods where social support is a priority, increasing the number of professionals from 28 to 42, working at 41 schools.

The programme will also now be extended to nursery schools, with five social educators to join education teams. Social educators will be active at twelve nursery schools in all, the goal being to support families with young children and in the most socially vulnerable situations.
