‘Household incomes in Barcelona 2018’ offers data by district and by neighbourhood, providing an insight into the structure of household resources with figures on salaries, professional incomes and social benefits.

Territorial inequality remained stable in Barcelona between 2015 and 2018, thanks to improved incomes in the neighbourhoods with the lowest figures, compensating those with the highest levels. This is one of the main conclusions in the report ‘Household incomes in Barcelona 2018’, which offers a first-ever analysis of the impact of redistributive measures by the public sector.

Another new aspect to the document, produced by the Municipal Data Office, is that it offers an insight into the structure of household incomes with figures on salaries, professional incomes and social benefits. This information can also be viewed by neighbourhood and by district.

One example of the redistributive effect can be found in the district of Nou Barris, where social benefits account for 24% of household incomes. This helps reduce territorial inequalities, as this district improves its primary income by eleven points, in other words the sum of income including benefits, tax and contributions. In contrast, in Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, the district with the highest income, primary incomes drop by twenty points.

These data allow for an assessment of public policies aimed at reducing inequalities and mitigating poverty in the city.
