The Barcelona Fire Service are celebrating the day of their patron saint, Sant Joan de Déu, with an open day at the Espai Bombers this weekend. This is an opportunity to discover the history of the Barcelona Fire Service and the building, the only historical fire station remaining in the city.
Visitors will be able to freely access the building on Saturday, from 11 am to 3 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm. There’s also an option of free guided tours, at 11.30 am and at 1 pm.
The museum building is open from 11 am to 3 pm on Sunday, with access in groups every twenty minutes and the last admission time at 2 pm. In addition, and on Sunday only, firefighters from the corps will be taking part with vehicles.
The Espai Bombers was the first purpose-built fire station in Barcelona, built for the International Expo of 1929. A tour of the building offers an insight into the history of the Barcelona Fire Service through its museum collection. The star exhibit is a Delahaye fire truck, better know as the Genoveva, one of the most iconic vehicles ever used by the corps.
Besides the tools on display, the museum also features interactive resources and audio-visuals which allow users to experience the sensations people might feel during a fire.
Anybody wishing to enjoy these activities this weekend simply needs to send an email in advance to espaibombers@bcn.cat, indicating the number of people visiting.
