Theatre
Tantarantana is a centre for theatrical creation and performance that hosts and supports theatre companies to allow them to develop their research and creation processes. It is a breeding ground for mutual understanding that works through a focus on the neighbourhood, the city and new audiences.
Tantarantana provides a backbone for cultural projects in the form of a private theatre with an orientation towards public service and the support of new creations, teamwork and continuity projects. This theatre concept prioritises artists over products and places the emphasis on the research of new theatrical and stage languages by constantly engaging in conversation with the community and the social environment. A theatre that is the driving force for change, transformation and coexistence in a constantly evolving active audience. A theatre that strives to create meeting points where artists can feel at home. A theatre that does not want to just be a place to showcase performances, but a centre for creation where new stage projects can be developed in a context of mutual understanding and trust.

Tantarantana moved to the Raval neighbourhood in 1996 after operating for four years in El Born, where it opened its first space in 1992. Its well-established 25-year background makes it the second oldest small-format venue in Barcelona. Tantarantana has been a member of Red de Salas Alternativas (network of alternative venues) since 1993, a dynamic association made up of various agents from the country’s contemporary theatre scene which is comprised of 44 private venues in 14 autonomous communities. It is also a member of ADETCA (Associació d’Empreses de Teatre de Catalunya – Catalonia’s Association of Theatre Businesses) which comprises 48 businesses from the private sector that work in theatre production, staging and distribution.
A private theatre with a public-service orientation that currently has two rooms (Baixos22 and Àtic22) and has evolved over the years by placing special importance on emerging companies and new theatre styles to allow it to welcome the diverse range of creator types that inhabit the performing arts sector today.
