Grants aimed at training, research and the realisation of artistic creation projects.

Fundación Botín is announcing 8 Visual Arts Grants aimed at training, research and the realisation of personal projects in the field of artistic creation (non-theoretical projects) for artists of any nationality. Two of these grants will be allocated to Spanish applicants or applicants who have resided in Spain for at least five years at the time of applying for the grant; applicants must also be under 30 years old so they can move abroad to continue with their work, studies or residency.

Artistic discipline

Visual arts

Amounts and aid

The amount allocated to each grant is €23,000. This amount includes expenses related to travel, accommodation, meals, studio rental, etc.
These amounts will be increased to include medical insurance (only in cases where relocation to another country is involved).
These grants will be subject to the tax law currently in force in Spain.
Method of payment: 45% at the beginning; 25% over the following two quarters; and 5% upon receipt of the final report.
This aid will be direct, indivisible and non-transferable. It will not cover family benefits.
This grant is not compatible with any other institutional aid intended for the same purpose.

Duration of the grant

This grant covers a period of 9 months. It will be possible to request an extension if this time has been spent abroad. If this is the case, a new application must be submitted within the deadline of the public announcement so that it can be evaluated on equal terms with the rest of the applications.

Application date

Until 4 May 2018

Terms

The grant will begin providing support from the moment it is allocated, and without interruption for the duration of the agreed period. It is compulsorily that this starts before the end of 2018.
The grant will be considered as definitively allocated as soon as the foundation receives a letter of acceptance in writing from the applicant.

Commitments

The aid from Fundación Botín must be mentioned in all documents produced during the period that the grant covers. If the grant leads to the possibility of a publication, Fundación Botín will have a preferential right to execute it. Should the Fundación not be interested in publishing, the publication must include the status of the artist as an awardee of the grant from Fundación Botín.

Fundación Botín may, for the period of the duration of the grant, assess the use of the grant and the development of the submitted project, either directly or by proxy.

The grant holder commits to providing Fundación Botín, within a month of the end of the grant (deadline: 30 November 2019), with a report containing a final assessment of the results and outcomes of the use of the grant, taking into account the objectives listed in the application. It should also include graphic documentation of the completed works.

The Fundación Botín’s exhibition calendar now includes the first ever exhibition of the works created by the artists at Centro Botín during the grant period. Therefore, the information and documentation, along with a loan of the requested work, must be provided by the artist, who agrees not to hold any solo exhibitions in Cantabria before this occurs.

Whenever the Advisory Committee deems it appropriate, works by the selected artists will be purchased. Said purchase may occur after the end of the grant period, and the final price will reflect the economic support received from Fundación Botín.

Failure to comply with any of the established rules will give Fundación Botín the right to act as it sees fit.

Selection

A jury formed expressly for this task will be in charge of selection. The jury will be made up of professionals from the art world and international critics and curators; its members will be made public once the application deadline closes. The decision of the jury will be final.

Calendar

Deadline for completing the form on the website and submitting the documentation to Fundación Botín: 4 May 2018.

Documentation received at Fundación Botín during the week after the closing date of the application process will still be accepted so long as the date of the postmark is 4 May 2018 or earlier.

Verdict: from 9 July 2018, available on the websites https://www.fundacionbotin.org/ and https://www.centrobotin.org/en/beca/fine-arts-grants/

Application process

In order to apply for the grant, the application form must be completed. It is available on this website and on the announcement’s page.

It is compulsory that hard copies of the rest of the documentation are forwarded in an envelope labelled “BECA ARTES PLÁSTICAS”. The application form must have been completed online before the documentation arrives in order for it to be associated with the correct form.

The documentation provided will preferably be in Spanish, although some exceptions will be made to allow English.

For organisation and assessment reasons, applicants must submit their documentation in DIN A4 format with a limit of 40 pages printed on one side (with no staples or binding of any kind). All applications that do not meet this requirement will be dismissed. With regard to audiovisual projects, artists can provide a DVD alongside the required portfolio.

The portfolio submitted for the application will not be returned after the decision has been made.

Fundación Botín reserves the right to request, with prior indication from the jury, the submission of additional documentation.

  • Spanish national ID card or NIE for residents of Spain. For non-Spanish residents, a passport or a proof of identity issued by the tax office of the resident country.
  • Passport photo
  • CV stating the applicant’s qualifications, professional activities, exhibitions, awards, grants, etc. (up to 3 DIN A4 pages printed on one side)

  • Graphic documentation, prints or colour photocopies of the artist’s work (originals or enclosed documentation such as catalogues, leaflets, original works, etc. will not be accepted). DIN A4, printed on one side.
