Manchukuo

The Manchukuo collection was acquired by Harvard University in March 2015 and is housed in the Harvard-Yenching Library. The collection includes ephemera (some 1,000 posters, postcards, photographs, maps, and brochures) and another 1,000 book and serial items. Most of these were published and produced in Manchukuo (1931-1945), Japan's puppet state in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia. Pictured here: The government promoted a cross-cultural appearance of unity that stood in odds with the true social landscape. An illustration shows a stereotypical laborer pushing happy children in Western and Chinese gear as they wave Japanese and Manchukuan flags. Stephanie Mitchell/Harvard Staff Photographer
