Under the slogan “Breathing Innovation” and with some twenty proposals that have arisen from the drive for innovation in all areas of the city council, between Tuesday 5 and Thursday 7 November, the latest innovative initiatives and policies that will help to guarantee access to housing, combat climate change and enable us to adapt to its effects will be on show.

Within the framework of the Climate Plan, various projects have been carried out that make Barcelona one of the leading cities in Europe in the move towards climate neutrality and minimising its environmental impact.

The municipal projects being presented at the new edition of the Smart City Expo form part of the city’s urban transformation, with a focus on sustainability, decarbonisation and zero emissions.

The ephemeral shade structures, recycled paving, like the paving installed on Via Júlia and in Plaça de Catalunya, the porous pavers used in the cycle lane on Carrer de Jordi Girona and aquatic drones are just some examples of what you’ll see at the stand.

The Municipal Institute of Information Technology (IMI), will be presenting technologies that have been deployed in public space to provide services of the highest quality and efficiency.  The IMI, together with other areas of the City Council, has deployed advanced technologies such as 5G antennas, surveillance cameras, sound meters and smart lighting systems, with the aim of optimising public spaces. This collaboration between the IMI and other areas of the City Council underscores the importance of the integration of technology in a hyper-connected Barcelona that is committed to achieving net zero.

To achieve a hyper-connected, decarbonised Barcelona, a whole series of structural and technological initiatives need to be worked on with a view to implementing them in the near future, and to:

  1. Increase the amount of public space where ICT infrastructures can be deployed for municipal use and for telecommunications operators.
  2. Provide connectivity for vehicles and other mobile elements.
  3. Deploy more and new ICT services for collecting data in public space and supplying these data to different municipal departments.
  4. Achieve a more dynamic, cross-cutting view of the city and better cross-data analysis through the development of the Barcelona Digital Twin.

Barcelona Activa will be present, showcasing emerging technology companies and will be holding the third edition of the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, a summit where deep tech developed by universities and research centres comes together.
