Mercat de Galvany

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

Prior to the construction of the market, which began in 1868, there was already an open-air market for farmers and fishmongers on the land where it is located. It is a building of great architectural value, listed as an artistic monument.

There was already an open-air market for farmers and fishmongers on the land that the Count of Galvany ceded to build a covered market. Although its construction began in 1868, it was not until 1927 that the final inauguration took place.

Architecture

The nave of the market, of exposed brick, is arranged in the shape of a Greek cross with a large octagonal central dome that stands on four large arches and with each of the eight sides decorated with modernist stained glass. The roof consists of a metal structure and a layer of wooden sheets. Inside the market, twenty-eight iron columns help support the roof.

The building has four majestic façades at the end of each of the ends of the nave, each decorated with nine interior arches. At the top of each arch is a small colourful modernist stained glass window and mosaics that form the old coat of arms of the city. On the side façades and the dome there are more modernist stained glass windows that are the star element of the market.

Inside, in the middle of the market, stands a modernist lamppost with a vintage clock.

Year of construction: started in 1868 and completed in 1927

Type of building: detached

Area: 2,201 m²

Refurbishments: Undergoing refurbishment project. Occasional reforms were carried out in the 1990s

Services: Car park, home delivery, online sales

Location: C. Santaló, 65
