Mercat de la Llibertat

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

We are in front of one of the city’s century-old markets, which owes its modernist decoration to Francesc Berenguer, a friend and admirer of Gaudí.

It is located on land owned by landowner Marc Olives, who in 1831 ordered the construction of houses and a large square, where farmers immediately settled to sell their goods.

The current building was inaugurated in 1888, following a project by the municipal architect of Vila de Gràcia, Miquel Pasqual i Tintorer. Its characteristic modernist decoration is the work of the architect Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, a friend and admirer of Gaudí.

Architecture

Opened in 1888 and in modernist style, in the central part of the façade, some very worked pieces of iron form a beautiful modernist shield of impossible shapes and the finish of the roof, made with pieces of black and reddish glazed ceramic, is topped with iron borders.

The roof is made of iron with a perimeter wall of exposed brick. Both at the top and bottom of the iron structure there is a series of panels with narrow horizontal openings that allow the passage of air, thus facilitating the ventilation of the market.

Year of construction: 1888

Type of building: detached

Area: 1,728 m²

Refurbishments: completed in 2009

Services: home delivery, information screens, pick-up points/lockers

Location: Pl. Llibertat, 27
