Mercat de la Marina

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

The Mercat de la Marina was inaugurated in October 2003 and allowed the closure and relocation of the stallholders from the Mercat del Port.

The creation of this market in Plaça de la Marina in October 2003 was part of the Marina-Zona Franca development project.

The Central Plan of la Marina transformed the appearance of the neighbourhood with the action on the block of the Philips factory Island and the Plaça de la Marina. Barcelona City Council proposed and developed this project in order to provoke the revitalisation of a space and a facility that could provide major added value to the neighbourhood.

In the reorganisation of the Plaça de la Marina, two different spaces were created: the area of the square, with a rest area and another for children, and the area under the square, with the new municipal market of la Marina.

The refurbishment of the Port market to the current one of the Marina, included in the PAM (Municipal Action Plan) 2000-2003, responded to the need to modernise and make more competitive a market with an excess of commercial supply not adjusted to the demands of consumption of the area and located in a neighbourhood that has undergone major structural changes (elimination of old factories, construction of new homes, creation of new green spaces, opening of new streets, arrangement of the road junction of Plaça Cerdà, etc.).

Built in 2003 and with an area of 2,037 m², the market retained its traditional offer of quality fresh produce that characterised it. In addition, the loading and unloading bays and rubbish collection were placed underground to avoid inconvenience to the neighbourhood.

Inauguration: 2003

Area: 2,037 m²

Services: supermarket, information screens

Location: Pg. Zona Franca, 178
