Mercat del Clot

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

Opened in 1889, the Mercat del Clot is the work of Pere Falqués i Urpí. This is the same architect who designed the Poblenou Market, which explains the similarity between the two buildings.

In the centre of the Clot, a neighbourhood of the old town of Sant Martí de Provençals, was born, in the mid-nineteenth century, an open-air market where farmers from many surrounding towns - such as Sant Andreu, Sant Adrià and Montcada - sold their produce there.

At the end of the century, and due to the large increase in shoppers caused by population growth, it was decided to build a covered market on land owned by the Buxó family. The project was signed by the municipal architect of Sant Martí de Provençals and was inaugurated in 1889.

For many years it was an important centre of provisions: until the 1960s, many people went there by train, but the construction of Avinguda Meridiana and the Maresme motorway moved it from the centre as an axis of commercial activities. It was refurbished at the end of the last century.

Architecture

The work of the architect Pere Falqués i Urpí, it is a building with great simplicity of forms. The nave is all of a single section, with a perimeter enclosure of exposed brick and a metal structure based on trusses that support the roof. The main façade has three large stained glass windows between two pillars and the side walls.

Type of building: detached

Area: 1,284 m²

Refurbishments: completed in 1995
