Mercat del Poblenou

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

Built in the late 19th century and completely refurbished in 2005, it is a market of modest dimensions and simple shapes that, in its beginnings, specialized in the sale of live cattle.

Built at the end of the 19th century, it was inaugurated in 1889, the same year as the neighbouring Mercat del Clot. At that time, Sant Martí was still an independent municipality and the market, in its beginnings, mainly hosted the sale of live cattle.

It was modernised in 1923, 1945 and 1996 with specific actions, until in 2005 it underwent a complete refurbishment.

Architecture

It is a market of modest dimensions, but of great beauty and simple forms, very similar to the Mercat del Clot, located in the same district. The nave, made of exposed stone and with an iron roof, consists of a central body and two sides. The main façade has two exposed stone pillars with yellow ceramics and two large grey glass panels installed in the last refurbishment. The side façades have the base of exposed stone from which a series of columns come out that reach to the roof.

Year of construction: 1889

Type of building: detached

Area: 1,696 m²

Refurbishments: Completed in 2005

Services: home delivery

Location: Pl. Unió, 25
