Mercat d’Hostafrancs

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

Identical to the Mercat de la Concepció, the Hostafrancs market supplied the workers of the old factories in the vicinity.

The Mercat d’Hostafrancs was inaugurated in 1888, coinciding with the first Universal Exposition hosted by Barcelona. The Mercat de la Concepció was also inaugurated that same year, which explains its similarity.

In the land now occupied by the market there had been a brick kiln and, in the past, in this market the workers of the many factories in the vicinity used to go there to buy. The closure of most of these factories was reflected in the activity of a market that, until the 1960s, had wooden stalls.

Architecture

The work of Antoni Rovira i Trias, it has an iron structure with perimeter enclosure of exposed stone. The nave consists of three bodies, one of a larger central and two of smaller and lower sides.

At the top of the façade there are iron panels with small openings that allow air to pass through, while in the middle, the central body has an iron structure in the form of arches with glass inside.

Year of construction: from 1880 to 1888

Type of building: detached

Area: 3,040 m²

Refurbishments: it underwent occasional reforms in the 1980s and 1990s.

Location: C. Creu Coberta, 93
