Refurbishment of the Mercat del Ninot

Història dels mercats
  1. Home

The works were an initiative of the IMMB in agreement with the traders, who approved the reform on 25th February, 2008 and continued their commercial activity in a temporary market from October 2009 to May 2015.

The comprehensive refurbishment work of the market was completed in the spring of 2015, and the project is the work of the MAP Arquitectes - MUR Garganté Arquitectes studio, directed by Josep Lluís Mateo.

Technical details

  • Recovery and rehabilitation of the entire building, including the roof and giving the façades a new impact with an overlay coating.
  • Integration of the external stalls on the façade of the building and recovery as public spaces of the two closed courtyards on the façade of Carrer de Mallorca.
  • Creation of a new main access to Carrer de Mallorca, with a large distribution hall, using ramps, stairs and lifts, to access the market and the new supermarket, located on a partially underground floor.
  • Maintenance of the sales room at the same level as before the reform and conservation of the accesses at street level from Carrer de Casanova and Villarroel.
  • Commercial redistribution of the stalls, which gained dimension and logistical capacity with the addition of cold rooms, workshops and tasting areas. Inclusion of a restaurant.
  • Excavation and construction of an underground floor to establish the logistics area of the market, loading and unloading bays, storerooms, waste treatment space and parking for customers.
  • Renovation of all water and electricity installations according to energy saving criteria. Installation of photovoltaic panels for heating and cooling and electricity consumption and solar panels for water heating.

Results

The facility has new services and infrastructure, such as 105 parking spaces for customers, home delivery service, application of energy efficiency measures - air conditioning through the use of photovoltaic panels and hot water through solar panels, illuminated with LED technology and flow regulation systems— and a supermarket managed by Mercadona.

The new market has 2,800 square metres, with 48 food stalls inside and 33 non-food stalls outside, integrated into the façade of the building. The facility also includes a new neighbourhood green point, which can be accessed through the existing passage between the streets of Casanova and Villarroel, in the new development.
