Replacement of Montjuïc escalators 17 and 18

Between 18 August and 5 October, the renovation of the escalators linking the MNAC car park with Avinguda de l’Estadi will be carried out. While these works last, in addition to there being no escalators, it will not be possible to go up or down on foot using the adjacent steps.

The process of renewing the Montjuïc escalators continues. This summer work is being carried out on the two consecutive escalators that go up from one end of the car park beside the Catalan National Art Museum (MNAC) up to the level of Avinguda de l’Estadi, in front of the CEM Bernat Picornell Swimming Pools.

The work site will be cordoned off in this case on Monday, 18 August. The stone steps that normally allow people to walk up and down at this point will be closed too. On Thursday 21 August, the dismantling of the old escalators will take place, with the installation of a large crane that will require expanding the work area.

An alternative route is another set of steps located closer to the Joan Maragall gardens, escalators 15 and 16, which start just behind the MNAC building. The new escalators 17 and 18 will begin to be installed on 8 September and will be operational during the week of 6 October.

The municipal company B:SM, promoter of these works, expects the complete renewal of all the Montjuïc escalators to be completed during the first quarter of 2026. This renovation, partially financed with Next Generation Funds under the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination Barcelona, will significantly improve accessibility to the entire mountain.
