Initial approval granted for tram connection projects on Avinguda Diagonal

The Commission for Ecology, Urban Planning, Mobility and Housing has given the green light for the second phase of the Diagonal’s renovation, which will include the construction of a tram line and the expansion of the main sewer collector. The work will be done in three separate sections: from Verdaguer to Cinc d’Oros, from Cinc d’Oros to Francesc Macià and from Francesc Macià to Avinguda de Sarrià.

The detailed redevelopment project for Avinguda Diagonal aims to complete the transformation of one of the city’s most iconic avenues into a metropolitan hub for sustainable mobility, pedestrian areas and urban greenery.

The works will cover a 2.8-kilometre stretch spanning 115,000 square metres. The renovation will expand the pedestrian zone by 16,000 square metres, add 18,900 square metres of green space and allocate 8,700 square metres to cycling areas, which is 1,800 square metres more than there is currently. This will include a four-metre-wide, two-way cycle lane.

From Passeig de Sant Joan to Passeig de Gràcia

This section is the next stage in the redevelopment begun in the first phase. The entire avenue will be renewed from façade to façade, with the tram and cycle lane running along the central axis, separated by a landscaped median. The current pavements, just two metres wide in some areas, will be expanded to 7.5 metres — a major improvement for pedestrians.

Motor traffic will be reduced to two lanes in each direction and moved to the outer edges, each 5.2 metres wide and lined with two rows of trees. This section will include the Diagonal–Cinc d’Oros stop, located between Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer de Pau Claris.

From Plaça del Cinc d’Oros to Plaça de Francesc Macià, the existing pavements, which were renovated and widened in 2015, will be retained. The central section of Avinguda Diagonal will maintain the layout of the previous section, incorporating the tram line and cycle lane, while the outer lanes will be reduced to two lanes of traffic. As a result, the current one-way cycle lanes will be removed.

This stretch will include two tram stops, at Balmes and Casanova, and there will also be a shared bus and tram platform between Via Augusta and Passeig de Gràcia.

Three targeted redevelopment projects will be undertaken to complete the connection with the Trambaix network. Firstly, the perimeter of the square will be redesigned, with new pavements being laid and new trees planted. The existing two-way cycle lane, which circles the entire square, will also be modified. The tram will run along the seaward side of the square.

Private traffic entering the city will be channelled into three outer lanes, with a new crossing point created to redirect traffic.

One of the city’s key future projects is to link the Trambaix and Trambesòs networks, with the aim of improving public transport and encouraging 250,000 people who currently travel by private car to make the switch.
