What are we doing?

Via Laietana is being transformed into an avenue that prioritises pedestrians and sustainable mobility: a greener street, with more space for walking and enjoying local commerce.

The pavements will be widened, so that they are all over 4 metres wide. There will be two bus-taxi lanes, one in each direction, along with bicycle lanes: this means a bicycle lane separated from traffic on the mountainward side, and a shared bicycle-bus lane on the seaward side.

The new Via Laietana will improve connectivity between the Gòtic and Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera neighbourhoods, with more crossings for pedestrians. It will also introduce four large relaxation areas along the street: the area around the junction with the new Carrer de Jonqueres, a large square at Antoni Maura, connecting the Cathedral with Mercat de Santa Caterina, Plaça de l'Àngel and Plaça d'Idrissa Diallo.

The communication campaign for the renovation works on Via Laietana to make it more user-friendly, allocating more space for pedestrians, bicycles, greenery and sustainable mobility has been financed by the European Union and the Government of Spain, with the European Next Generation funds and within the framework of the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

TRAFFIC CIRCULATION WILL BE RESTRICTED TOWARDS THE MOUNTAINS

TRAFFIC HEADING TOWARDS THE SEA

The new Via Laietana has more space for pedestrians, with wider pavements (at least 4 metres) and large areas where people can spend time and engage in activity. The new design also backs public transport and bicycles. The avenue will have two traffic lanes heading towards the sea: a bus lane shared with taxis and bicycles, and a second lane for all other vehicles from Plaça Urquinaona to Passeig de Colom.

TMB buses 47, V15 and V17, along with the 120 neighbourhood bus, circulate in Via Laietana in the direction of the sea. Bus 59 also does so provisionally, while the work in La Rambla is being carried out.

TRAFFIC HEADING TOWARDS THE MOUNTAINS

Heading in the direction of the mountains, cyclists have access to an exclusive bike lane, segregated from all the other lanes.

The other traffic lane will be restricted to certain vehicles, with only the following allowed to circulate:

  • Public transport: TMB buses 47, 120 and V15 (further information) circulate. Bus V17 circulate in the direction of the mountains using Pg. Lluís Companys.
  • Emergency vehicles and public services.
  • Vehicles belonging to local residents in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Gòtic and Barceloneta neighbourhoods.
  • Taxis.
  • Users of vehicle repair workshops located in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera neighbourhood.
  • Car parks located in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera neighbourhood.
  • Hotels, hostels and pensions located in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera neighbourhood.
  • Users of the logistics platform at Santa Caterina Market.

In addition, and only in the section between Plaça Idrissa Diallo and Plaça Antoni Maura, urban goods distribution vehicles registered with the DUM area via the SPRO app will also be able to circulate, from Mondays to Fridays, 10 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 4 pm.

This lane features signs indicating the prohibition on circulation except for authorised vehicles, with number-plate reading cameras also to be installed soon allowing for fines to be issued automatically for access infringements here. During this time, natural and legal persons with authorised access will be given information to be able to conduct the relevant procedures and register their vehicles, with a system similar to the one already in operation at other points in the city.
