Barcelona is taking part in CHANGE, the City Hub and Network for Gender Equity, a joint initiative with Los Angeles, Freetown, London, Mexico City, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Melbourne and Cape Town to create the first and only international network of cities specifically aimed at promoting gender equality. At the network's annual summit held last December, a number of cities shared their projects and experiences in this area. We have collected this valuable material and added subtitles in order to publicise it.
On 8 March, to mark International Women’s Day, CHANGE shared six videos explaining what the cities of Bogota, Buenos Aires, Freetown, Melbourne, Mexico City and Barcelona are doing to make progress in the field of gender equity.
Their efforts range from the provision of basic services, such as health and education, to testing innovative pilot projects and scaling them up; from recognising and redistributing unpaid care work to fighting against gender violence; from mainstreaming the gender perspective to empowering girls and women. These are the CHANGE cities’ experiences, which you will find in this set of presentations made at the network’s annual summit held in December 2022.
More specifically, you will find the following videos, all of them in Spanish or English with subtitles:
- Bogota presents its care system, which operates under the motto “Caring for those who take care of us”.
- Buenos Aires shares its PARES project, which promotes female representation in the job market.
- Freetown explains the city’s approach to helping girls and women access basic services such as water, sanitation and markets.
- Melbourne presents its inclusive strategy and women’s empowerment plan.
- Mexico City describes the policies and programmes that have helped reduce gender violence in the city.
- Barcelona analyses the key components required for a successful gender mainstreaming strategy.
Other products and results of Barcelona’s involvement in CHANGE also include the CHANGE Gender Equity Toolkit, which sets out a selection of good practices, and the Voluntary Gender Review (VGR), an adaptation on a local scale of countries’ voluntary reports in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This document shows the work carried out by the network’s member cities to attain SDG 5: “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”. The document was presented on 12 July at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. All documents are available in English and Spanish.
