Science. The building forms part of the Ciutadella del Coneixement knowledge hub.
The process is now under way to reclassify the site of the state vehicle fleet so that the facility can be located there. The future centre for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) forms part of the project for the Ciutadella del Coneixement knowledge hub, which is set to transform the park into a science and research driver.
The new facility will include two new health research institutes with a capacity for 300 people and 40 work teams, and provide the space needed for the services of the Government Delegation in Catalonia.
The municipal process comes after an agreement was signed with the Ministry for Science and Innovation in October 2023, paving the way for the site to be used. The premises will provide the Spanish National Research Council with nearly 13,000 square metres of space.
Transformation in progress
The science and urban planning project in the Parc de la Ciutadella is moving forward, with developments inside and outside the park. The first two facilities, the Hivernacle plant house and the Centre Martorell d’Exposicions, are already open, with the Umbracle to be renovated in 2024 and the façade of the Tres Dragons building in 2025.
Work on the new research and innovation complex to be housed in the former Mercat del Peix is also set to start next year. This will give the Pompeu Fabra University three new buildings, with three strategic partners taking part: the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, the Spanish National Research Council and the Pompeu Fabra University.
