The dawn of the twentieth century brought fresh opportunities for Barcelona but many uncertainties as well. The construction of the Eixample, which annexed virtually all the villages in the Cerdà Plan along with the growth of new industries, turned the old provincial city into a thriving, diverse and cosmopolitan metropolis, although one which was full of contradictions. In the political domain, the first decade of the twentieth century saw the consolidation of Catalan nationalism, the emergence of modern-day republicanism, the rising awareness of the working class and the establishment of a brutal populism, positions which were on a collision course hitherto unknown. This highly informative book looks back at the city’s urban evolution illustrated through original maps and drawings, along with recent photographs of places that still exist today as well as historic material from difference sources.
