Greenery and Biodiversity Plan for 2012-2020

Barcelona is committed to preserving and improving the ecological infrastructure so green spaces in the city set up a real green network for the benefit of all citizens. To achieve this, Urban Ecology area has developed the Green and Biodiversity Plan defining the challenges, goals and commitments of the municipal administration in connection with the conservation of green and biological diversity of the city. The document plans in the long-term actions to achieve ecological infrastructure producing benefits for people and constituting not only an environmental but also a social service to meet the challenges of the future.

To make the most from green surface and work on their connectivity through green corridors.

3rd

To maximize environmental and social services from green and biodiversity and to enhance the value which society assigns to them.

4th

To make the city more resilient to emerging challenges such as climate change.

1

To preserve the natural heritage of the city.

The conservation of the natural heritage is one of the main challenges of sustainable development. In the city, this particular challenge to preserve and enhance biodiversity, as well as species and habitats preservation, implements preventive and corrective measures in those activities in the public space that may involve an impact.

2

To plan urban green looking connectivity and equitable distribution.

Strengthening ecological infrastructure involves rethinking the current green system of the city and to start metropolitan projects connecting green and biodiversity conservation that will create a network of green corridors connecting the spaces between them and Collserola, as well as the river areas of the Llobregat and Besòs.

3

To design the city and green spaces considering environmental services and integrating criteria for biodiversity.

Green spaces help regulate urban microclimate, involved in the water cycle and are the support of biodiversity. Therefore, efficiency criteria in its conception and design must be added and permeate the ground in the public space, limiting maintenance and water resources in the garden areas and vegetation adapted to environmental conditions.

4

To create new spaces for nature and increase the presence of green and biodiversity.

Although Barcelona is a compact city with a high population density and few natural areas, we must try to create new and enhance existing green to enhance their habitat function.

5

To manage parks and gardens and other green spaces with criteria of efficiency and sustainability in favor of biodiversity.

To reduce water demand of green spaces taking advantage of groundwater resources, making comprehensive control of pests and diseases, using the most suitable soil, using plants debris and ultimately implementing a management and maintenance procedures adapted to each type of vegetation, should allow to enjoy a quality urban natural heritage.

6

To preserve and give value to the cultural heritage, especially in the historic gardens.

The parks and gardens of the city pose a conservation requirement and specific preservation measures calling for special protection and management such as making Montjuïc the paradigm of Barcelona gardener heritage and develop a preservation plan of tree species in Barcelona.

7

To increase knowledge for the management and conservation of green and biodiversity.

The conservation of biodiversity in the urban environment is a new challenge for which there is still a lack of theoretical and applied knowledge. Thus, it is necessary to be vigilant and continue the process of transformation that climate change is producing on the natural heritage and encourage further studies on the benefits of green and biodiversity.

8

To disseminate green knowledge and enhance biodiversity and is values through training.

The concepts related to biodiversity are still quite unknown to the general public. It is important to raise awareness of its wealth, its importance, its benefits and the impacts to which it is subjected through communication, training and educational strategies.

9

To promote green areas as spaces for health and enjoyment and to promote citizens' involvement in the creation and preservation of biodiversity.

Urban green spaces contribute to improving the quality of life, well-being and health of people, and diversification in the profiles of users of green spaces in Barcelona is an important factor to consider when it comes to planning and designing them. It is therefore necessary to implement a Plan of social uses for green spaces in Barcelona and improve the provision of leisure and health facilities in parks with citizen participation.

10

To strengthen the municipal leadership, networking and engagement in preserving the green and biodiversity.

The goal is to make Barcelona a green reference participating in city networks and with the relevant organizations involved with the issue of biodiversity and enhance networking and collaboration with institutions and organizations committed to biodiversity.
