Mobility. Thirty two new bike lanes are to be created in the city in the next few months, moving towards sustainable and active mobility.
The expansion of Barcelona’s bike lane network entails 32 new lanes in the next few months. For safety reasons, priority will be given to one-way lanes and those using road surfaces. The idea is to contribute to sustainable and active mobility in the city.
Work will be done on 11 bike lanes on the summer, as well as a further 21 by the end of the year. Bike lanes are currently being built in the following streets: C/ Josep Garner, C/ París, C/ Ganduxer, C/ Doctor Fleming, Av. Pau Casals, C/ Esteve Terrades, C/ Rio de Janeiro, C/ Degà Bahí, C/ Sant Antoni Maria Claret – Indústria – Biscaia and C/ Sardenya – Ramon Trias Fargas. Likewise, the bike lane connecting Barcelona and Esplugues de Llobregat is also under construction. The aim is to move towards a Bicing service which is coherent, connected and comprehensive, with all Barcelona inhabitants able to access a bike lane within 300 metres of their home.
In order to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, priority is being given to one-way lanes going in the same direction as traffic and which use the road surface. Some 80% of existing lanes use road surfaces, freeing up pavements for pedestrians. The latest bike lanes to be shifted onto road surfaces this summer are those in Pg. Sant Joan, Pg. Pujades, and the connection between Av. Diagonal and the Campus Besòs.
Boosting sustainable and active mobility
The number of cyclists in Barcelona grew by 14% last year. “There’s still a long way to go, because the number of people using the bike lane network just keeps growing and needs must be suitably met”, noted the Councillor for Mobility, Mercedes Vidal.
Barcelona currently has 152 km of bike lanes. In just over two years’ time, the network will have been increased by 31%, with 26 different actions carried out. The goal is to move toward sustainable mobility which doesn’t pollute, and active mobility, which benefits people’s health.
