From a young age, Jaume Aiguader i Miró (Reus, 1882 – Mexico City, 1943) was deeply committed to social causes which would lead him to take part in a multitude of social and cultural initiatives. A medical graduate who was aware of the health problems among the working class, he was a leading figure in the struggle to improve working and health conditions of the underprivileged classes in Catalonia. In 1931 he was active in the founding of the political party, Esquerra Republicana, became the first Republican mayor to be elected and later became a Member of Parliament in Madrid. Minister of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War, he finally fled first to France and later to Mexico where he died shortly after, without ever abandoning his intense commitment to politics.
