The history of the First Republic is unknown territory for most people. It is a fascinating story in itself, without being the precedent for anything else, and it shows us the unpredictability of moments of acceleration in historical time. To introduce readers to this period and show them what it meant, in this volume we reproduce the original book by Miquel González i Sugranyes, La República en Barcelona. Apuntes para una crónica [The Republic in Barcelona. Notes for a chronicle]. This is not a book of memories by an old Republican, but rather a history book written by someone who was at the same time a witness, protagonist and analyst. The book features an introductory study that offers an insight into the foundations of republicanism and federalism as the central elements of the tension between the bases of Republicanism and the institutions in the construction of democracy. The book also gives readers the chance to consult the annexes of the work of Sugranyes with more than one hundred documents, each preceded by a brief description which has been incorporated into this edition. It also includes the biographies of the leading political and military authorities of the First Republic in Barcelona.
