During the years-long Spanish Civil War, a group of illustrators took up their pencils to build a new world based on libertarian ideals. Along the way they fought against fascism and capitalism, criticised the Spanish Republic and armed the war effort with their art. Silenced and repressed by the dictatorship and forgotten in democracy, they are now reborn from ink and paper to reflect on the present and look to the future. The book features illustrations and drawings by Acín, Shum, Helios Gómez, Monleón, Grapa, Cochet, Boy, Gumsay, Carmona, Sim, Toni Vidal, Les, Lamolla, Lobo, Esbelt, Niu, KDNA and Badia Vilató. Focusing on libertarian illustration, this is the second publication to come out of the research project “Gràfica anarquista” [Anarchist graphics], led by the Observatori de la Vida Quotidiana, and complements the previous publication Fotografia i revolució social (1936-1939).
What are them saying
"Aquest segon llibre de l’OVQ, minuciós i rigorós, rescata de l’oblit les vides i les obres de molts artistes que, com diu el pròleg, “llapis o fusell en mà, s’ho van jugar tot i van perdre”. Van lluitar contra el feixisme i el capitalisme. Van criticar la República. I van posar el seu art al servei de la guerra. "
