In a Europe that was shaken by religious rivalry and wars, the gulf between Catholicism and Protestantism seemed practically irreconcilable. The invention of the printing press enabled the swift spread of Protestant teachings and the subsequent Catholic reactions. Barcelona was receptive to the religious and artistic changes of the time, and adapted to the innovations that were taking place in other towns and cities. As a consequence, the city was also influenced by the prevailing graphic culture. Foreign prints served both to spread the teachings and at the same time provide a source of inspiration for local painters and sculptors.
