This year, Mercabarna-flor has brought together more than 2,000 florists and designers from all over Spain, as part of a new edition of its macrodemonstrations dedicated to discovering the latest trends, techniques and materials in floral art for this Christmas. The market has hosted demonstrations by five of the most outstanding schools in the country: the Andalusian School, the Catalan School, the Spanish School, the Les Salines Institute and the Rosa Valls-Formació School.

The Mercabarna-flor National Floral Art Competition was also held, with florist Eva Arqués taking home top prize. The day was rounded off with workshops imparted by teachers from the participating schools, focussing on current techniques and sustainable materials for creating compositions drawing on the latest trends.

The creative proposals for this Christmas will be marked by two opposing styles: luxurious sophistication and rustic minimalism. According to Marta Arnau, creative director from Mercademostracions, the decoration will be inspired by opulence and abundance in the first case, with wreaths, garlands and bouquets fit to be displayed in any room of the home; and in simplicity and warmth in the second, with straight lines, neutral colours and relaxed environments inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics.

The two styles will share common elements: a clear commitment to the connection with nature, the use of sustainable materials and the recovery of handcrafted ornaments. The compositions will incorporate Christmas bouquets, which will replace the traditional poinsettia, and colours that combine deep browns with intense reds, burgundy, dark greens and metallic touches. XXL ornaments will also be a trend, such as velvet bows and large-format spheres.

As for the Christmas tree, a return to cultivated fir trees is expected, decorated with natural materials and dynamic lighting. Tables will also play a special role, with personalised details, natural flowers and handcrafted elements that offer warmth and sophistication. As part of these proposals, Mercabarna-flor has reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a benchmark in floral innovation.
