Grants to foster the protection and improvement of the city‘s urban landscape

Ajuts per al foment de la protecció i millora del paisatge urbà

Barcelona City Council‘s Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape and Quality of Life (IMPUQV) has created a call for grant applications to foster the protection and improvement of the urban landscape. The initiative aims to promote the recovery of heritage while paying attention to environmental sustainability and supporting small shops.

The call for applications includes financial aid aimed at commercial establishments of less than 500 m² which are undertaking construction work in their businesses - a key factor in the configuration of Barcelona‘s urban landscape- and meet the campaign requirements. There are also specific sections aimed at protected historic establishments as well as non-protected historic establishments.

  • Commercial activities in Barcelona‘s buildings are one of the main factors involved in configuring the city‘s image from an aesthetic point of view, and the fact that this involves respect for the comfort of city residents in public spaces, as well as for its symbolic value and the revitalisation of those areas

  • These grants include three categories which affect commerce:

Improving the exterior image of commercial establishments. It includes the renovation of the establishment‘s exterior image, with the renovation of exterior woodwork; identification; the removal of installations visible from the street; cleaning up added or obsolete elements; and work to recover the establishment‘s exterior architectural composition, materials and colours. All actions described in the above paragraph intended to improve the establishment‘s exterior image, accessibility and sustainability are included in the protected budget. The owners or tenants of commercial establishments under 500 m² may apply, provided they meet the campaign‘s general requirements. 20% of the total cost will be subsidised, up to a limit of €8,000.

Non-protected historic establishments. Includes the same actions as the last section. The owners or tenants of establishments of under 500 m² may apply, provided that they meet the campaign‘s general requirements and where they can prove the property‘s status as a historic establishment. Establishments with a change of owner or activity may also apply. 35% of the total cost will be subsidised, up to a limit of €8,000.

Protected (emblematic) historic establishments. It includes the renovation of the establishment‘s exterior image, with the renovation of exterior woodwork; identification; the removal of installations visible from the street; cleaning up added or obsolete elements; and work to recover the establishment‘s exterior architectural composition, materials and colours. Actions qualifying for subsidies also include those interior elements protected under the Special Urban Development Plan for Protecting Urban Quality catalogue. The owners and tenants of commercial establishments included in the Special Urban Development Plan for Protecting Urban Quality may apply, provided that they meet the general requirements of the campaign. Establishments with a change of owner or activity may also apply. 50% of the total cost will be subsidised, up to a limit of €20,000.

  • Applications may be submitted until 15 November 2023 via the usual procedure at Barcelona City Council‘s e-headquarters.

  • Further information about the grant campaign and access to the procedure on the Barcelona City Council‘s Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape and Quality of Life website. You can also consult the campaign at, here.
