Mr David Escudé
Councillor for Sport
Dear David,
Above all, the public relevance of sport for Barcelona comes from its positive contribution to basic aspects of life in the city, such as health, education, community life, social inclusion and even economic prosperity.
We aim to promote sport as a habitual practice among city residents and help it to recover a central role in the city, as well as being a factor for development, linked to the creation of jobs and new technologies. In the next four years, we will expand the horizons of sport, turning the sea front into a blue pavilion, an ideal scenario for encouraging the general public to try beach and nautical sports.
The aim is to establish complicities, in order to make sport a major catalyst for economic sustainability, social and environmental policies, while applying the gender perspective to the promotion of sport.
And also to help maintain Barcelona’s international reputation as a sports capital, by attracting and organising major sporting events that are in line with the city’s sustainable development goals.
Therefore, as Councillor for Sport, you should focus on the following priorities:
- Striving to continue promoting Barcelona as a healthy, sporting city. This means opting for universal access to sport and promoting the Recepta Esportiva programme. Sporting organisations form one of the cornerstones of our system and you should provide them with support, so that they have the instruments they need to adapt to new realities, as well as leading a new support plan.
- Promoting sport from a local perspective. Improving our network of sports facilities to facilitate access.
- Collaborating in the development and implementation of innovation and technology in the sports sector. Among other things, this involves consolidating the Barcelona Sports Hub community and promoting the Palau Municipal d’Esports. You should promote an e-sports and virtual sports strategy.
- Leading the reinforcement of the city’s sports governance model and improving internal organisation, the way facilities are managed, territorial coordination, and national and international relations.
- Promoting Barcelona’s brand and international reputation as a sporting city. This involves continuing with a commitment to a calendar of international events and introducing measures that make it possible to reduce their environmental impact while improving sustainability.
I am sure that your passion for sport and for Barcelona will result in tireless work in favour of one of our city’s marks of identity.
Kind regards,
Mayor of Barcelona
The Mayor's mission letters set out the municipal government's priorities for this term of office. Making Barcelona the city that leads the responses to the main global challenges, offering solutions to Barcelona’s residents and promoting shared, sustainable and inclusive progress.
