Third Research and Development Grant at Interactive Lab

Hangar, a centre of production and research in the visual arts in Barcelona, ​​is now inviting applications for its three grants aimed at researchers and developers in the field of open source technology who would like to undertake a three-month research, development and/or production residency at its interactive lab.

 

Hangar plays a role in the development of custom hardware for arts projects through its engagement with open-source software and hardware. In its Interactive Lab, Hangar is able to develop all kinds of hardware for arts projects that need it, including the development of internal electronics, programming and prototype construction. Examples of the applications include: real time interaction, synchronizations, mechanisms, automations and remote controls. The Lab is also a site for the development of a series of copyright-free tools, available to relevant arts projects.

Target Candidates

Artists, researchers and developers of any age or nationality working in the creative field using open source technology.

The competition will consider projects that need to carry out a phase of research, development, construction of prototypes or production in Hangar’s Interactive Lab.

Residency Duration

The grant will last for three consecutive months over the rest of 2018. Specific dates will be established by mutual agreement between Hangar and the candidate of the selected project.

 Conditions

  1. The application must be submitted using the online form.
  2. Each candidate may submit one project only to the competition.
  3. Hangar will make available to the grant holder:
  • Professional fees: 1500 € gross.
  • A production grant of up to 2000 € gross.
  • Work space in Hangar’s interactive lab.
  • Technical support for project development and production.
  • Access to Hangar’s network of partners/contributors.

* IMPORTANT: This grant does not include accommodation or travel costs.

 

Obligations of the successful project chosen by Hangar

  • Participation in the invigoration of Open Thursdays**, responding to the needs of other creators and offering them free technical support.
  • Deliver a presentation of the project during the period of residency at Hangar.
  • Organize and lead a free open workshop about the tools used for the project’s development.
  • Delivery of a final project report and an appraisal of the residency at some point up to two months after its completion.
  • Include the Hangar logo in written correspondence about the project.

 

** Open Thursdays are weekly encounters open to artists, creators and developers working in various disciplines of electronic art who want to work with open-source hardware and software tools. Attendance is always open and free of charge, thus enabling participants to meet technological experts in open-source tools and collectives with whom they can collaborate and share resources for developing future projects.

Assessment Criteria

The selection committee will evaluate each project according to:

  • Applicant’s record in the field.
  • Degree to which the proposal fits within the lines of the work undertaken by Hangar and the interactive lab itself.
  • Viability and potential of the project’s development at Hangar.
  • Quality, relevance and interest of the project.
  • Technical qualifications and degree of self-sufficiency of the artist or developer
  • Ability of the project to open up and share its development process with the surrounding communities at Hangar.

 Selection

The selection committee will comprise:

– Two members of Hangar’s programmes commission.
– Miguel Ángel de Heras, person in charge of Hangar’s interactive lab.

Decision of selection committee: second half of September 2018.
Residency period: during 2018. To be arranged with Hangar.
