ASIMETRIES / ESPAI E: Research Residency and Viver de Processos (‘Process Hive’)
ESPAI E is a space for experimentation, learning, interdisciplinarity and cultural research, applied to contexts currently in transition. Under the theme of ASIMETRIES (ASYMMETRIES), the group proposes the exploration of areas of the city affected by issues of inequality, lack of opportunity, vulnerability or imposed insecurity. More specifically, contexts in transition defined by asymmetry, and for this reason lifestyles, spaces or activities are the result of instability, transcience or fragility, circumstances that now demand projectual paths of opportunity.
ESPAI E / ASIMETRIES is calling for research-action applicants to form an applied research group, comprising creators and researchers in the field of art and culture, with the aim of developing a process of collaborative creation and production within the context of Barcelona.

Residency Features
The call is for successful applicants to form part of a research residency and “viver de processos” (“Process Hive”) that will explore the concept : “Asymmetry” as it applies to spaces currently in a state of transition within the city of Barcelona. The resident research group will take part in the definition and collaborative production of a piece of research that can be structured in various ways (publication, exhibition, public presentation). This work group can anticipate resources provided by a training space and conferences (organised by Idensitat in partnership with Fabra i Coats Arts Factory), which will count on the involvement and support of individuals from various disciplines and universities.
On Offer
The research group in residence is being shaped by means of an open call that will identify applicants with proposals, ideas or research areas with the potential or means to contribute to the structuring of the framework mooted by ESPAI E. Alongside this research-action group will be formed a ‘hive’ or ‘nursery’ of experimental and projectual processes, which will meet weekly at Fabra i Coats and benefit from external advice from professionals coming from diverse disciplines and affiliated to various different universities.
Those individuals making up the RESEARCH RESIDENCY AND VIVER DE PROCESSOS group will take part in a specific training programme involving intensive workshops, seminars and turorials led by researchers and professionals from various fields and monitoring and support from the Idensitat team. The work programme will be linked to a weekly training programme and ongoing supervision of the research by Idensitat and its partners. On occasion, these training spaces will be open to students or individuals invited by the teacher leading the seminar or workshop; in this way, there will be an exchange of knowledge between the research group and the student group accompanying the invited guest(s).
The project envisages different formats of public dissemination for the research, such as an edited publication, the staging of an exhibition and/or an intervention in public space, based on the proposal(s) developed throughout the research residency.
There will also be the possibility of taking part in the Jornades Espai E, to be held in October at Fabra i Coats – Arts Factory in partnership with EINA Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art (EINA University Centre of Design and Art) affiliated to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

The selection panel deciding on applications will comprise: Tània Costa (Professor at EINA, University Centre of Design and Art - affiliated to UAB, Coordinator of Masters programme at EINA University of Research in Art and Design and UAB and of the Design and Social Innovation, Art and Design in/for transition Research Group); Clara Boj (Artist and Educator, member of collective Lalalab, Professor at Universitat Politècnica de València and Director of Masters), Gaspar Maza (Anthropologist, Professor of Urban Anthropology at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona); Ramon Parramon (Director of Idensitat), Irati Irulegui (Curator and ESPAI E Project Coordinator within Idensitat); Roser Colomar (Graduate in Visual Communications and Idensitat Project Coordinator); and a member of Fabra i Coats-Fàbrica de Creació in Barcelona.
