CREATION SUPPORT PROGRAMME RESIDENCIES 2019

In this round of applications, the residencies offered by La Central are being divided into different categories or creative transits. Each category is conceived as a transit, a creative stage that seeks to respond to the individual needs of each project according to its current state of development.

The residencies will be held between January and December 2019. Dates will be confirmed with the companies in line with availability of spaces.

For further information, please consult the rules of the competition.

Category: ‘At Source’ (‘En origen’) Transit: Dynamic Residencies

As part of the “At Source” transit, the dynamic residencies are conceived as a space to experiment, shake things up, inject dynamism and share moments of research and engagement around a theme, with the participation of a non-circus art or discipline. A maximum of 3 proposals will be selected from among all those submitted in this round of applications.

Target Candidate

Spanish or international circus artists or companies that:

  • are developing a research project;
  • and wish to work with a specialist from another discipline (arts or otherwise) on a specific theme and to share and investigate without an end goal of production, but with a strong dimension of encounter and dialogue.

It is essential that at least 2 people take part (one of whom comes from a non-circus discipline).

The residency, therefore, will be a moment of encounter with other disciplines that will intervene to inspire research. This encounter may be delivered in many different ways; we give free rein to your imagination and requirements!

By way of example, previous dynamic residencies involved participating professionals from the worlds of photography, choreography, university and scientific research, lyrical song, music, etc.

Conditions

Each selected project will benefit from:

  • access to a creation room for 2 weeks
  • a bursary totalling a minimum of 700 €, intended to cover food and transport costs that the company or artist might face during the residency. In the case of artists with tax domicile outside Spain, taxes corresponding to the different taxation systems must be deducted from this amount. The amount is for a project involving the continuous presence of 2 people. The final amount will be linked to the number of participating members.

It is anticipated that, at the end of the residency, there will be a moment for sharing the research undertaken, whether as an open rehearsal or in any other potential format.

Category: ‘In Study’ (‘En estudi’) Transit

This residency format aims to respond to the requirements of companies and artists who are beginning the creation of an act or piece lasting for a maximum of 20 minutes.

A maximum of 8 proposals will be selected from among all those submitted in this round of applications.

Target Candidate

The ‘In Study’ residencies are conceived for artists, duos or new circus companies who have recently committed to creating a new project, and who wish to dedicate to it a period of intense creation over the next few months. A fixed date for preview or premiere is not required.

The concept is to reach, by the end of the residency, a short form, an act or a sketch lasting around 20 minutes.

Preference for these residencies will be given to Catalan and other Spanish companies, although applications from companies from other European countries will be considered.

Conditions

Each selected project will benefit from:

  • access to a creation room for 3-6 weeks
  • a bursary totalling a minimum of 800 €, intended to cover food and transport costs. In the case of artists with tax domicile outside Spain, taxes corresponding to the different taxation systems must be deducted from this amount. The amount is for a company with one member for a period of 3 weeks. The final amount will be calculated according to the number of company members taking part in the residency, the number of residency weeks completed and other forms of support for the project.
  • arts monitoring and advice about production/contracting from the La Central del Circ.

At the end of the residency there is likely to be a performance of the work undertaken in the form of an open rehearsal, to which the Central’s Espais Còmplices may be invited, a grouping of spaces and festivals interested in backing and scheduling contemporary circus pieces.

Category: ‘In Production’ (En Fabricació) Transit

This residency format is aimed at companies and artists who are completing the creative process of a piece longer than 20 minutes.

A maximum of 8 proposals will be selected from among all those submitted in this round of applications.

Target Candidate

The ‘In Production’ residencies are conceived for companies that are working in extended formats of more than 20 minutes, and that need to concentrate on the creative process over the next few months with the aim of performing the resulting work in an exhibition space.

  • arts monitoring and advice about production/contracting from the La Central del Circ

At the end of the residency there is likely to be a performance of the work undertaken in the form of an open rehearsal, to which the Central’s Espais Còmplices may be invited, a grouping of spaces and festivals interested in backing and scheduling contemporary circus pieces.

Category: Pre-premiere Residency

One proposal will be selected from among all those submitted in this round of applications.

Target Candidate

This residency is aimed at professional circus companies that are creating a show and reaching the end of the creative process. Preference will be given to Catalan and other Spanish companies, although applications from companies from other European countries will be considered.

The process of creation must be in a highly advanced state and the official opening night of the sow must be forecast for the end of 2019 or start of 2020.

Conditions

The residency and pre-premiere will take place between March and December 2019. Dates will be confirmed in accordance with company availability and the events calendar of La Central del Circ.

The proposal must adapt to the technical capabilities of the Central’s Mise-en-scène room, bearing in mind the options of having a frontal or circular format.

The company will contribute to the assembly and dismantling of the hall. The dismantling will take place on the same day as the pre-premiere, as soon as the show is over.

La Central del Circ will fix an entry fee of 4 Euros on the day of the performance. Box office receipts will cover part of the costs generated by the residency.

The selected company will benefit from:

  • a 2-week technical residency in the Mise-en-scène room (the company must bring its own lighting engineers and, if required, sound engineers)
  • technical support for assembly and dismantling of circus apparatus (which in no case will replace the company’s own technical staff, an essential requirement)
  • support for dissemination with professionals in the sector, press and the general public; and for logistical matters (box office, ushers, etc.)

The length of the residency will be two weeks so that the company can rehearse as well as perfect lighting designs. Days for assemblage must be agreed with the technical team before the residency begins.

If the application process fails to reach a decision, La Central del Circ reserves the right to offer the pre-premiere residency to the project it deems appropriate.

Assessment Criteria

Particular attention will be given to the artistic quality of the projects, the technical level of the proposed circus discipline(s), the level of innovation/renewal and its originality in terms of authorship and ethical references of the project.

Selection

Project selection will be made by a committee made up of the artistic direction and arts council of the La Central del Circ, a group of artists with a broad arts background and knowledge of the circus community.

If the committee deems it appropriate, it may offer some of the submitted projects the “Micro-residency” offer (short residencies without financial backing).

An agreement will be drawn up between each selected project and La Central del Circ. The latter reserves the right to declare any category of the competition null and void.
