JOAN BROSSA RESIDENCY
2019 sees the centenary of the birth of the poet, playwright and visual artist Joan Brossa. This particular residency will be devoted to Action Theatre. Contemporary Action Theatre.
Action Theatre, within the universe of Joan Brossa, was an exploration of the theatrics of his era. Scholars classify it into five typologies of dramatic production. Although they often share themes, resources and paradigms, they present specific and distinct traits that can be classified as follows: action-spectacles, ballets, striptease, action-musicals and fregolisms (monologues of transformation).

Aims of the Creation Process
The aim of the research process takes its cue from the exploration of Joan Brossa’s Action Theatre and the historical, political and social context in which it was framed to develop a stage production that keeps alive the spirit of transgression the poet forged during his lifetime. Brossa drew direct inspiration from the aesthetic approaches of the historical avant-gardes, which implied addressing head-on the fact of creation without a priori conceptions or taboos. The direct rejection of the choice of mimesis – the copying of reality – and the break with the Aristotelian unities allowed Brossa to write markedly anti-rhetorical productions.
- What is the state of Action Theatre today? Which Action Theatre fulfils this spirit today?
- What discursive, plastic and dramatic aesthetics now comprise the Brossian legacy?
Providing answers to these questions physically, on stage and by performing the results to an audience without written or theoretical documents is the conceived aim of this 2019 Joan Brossa dramatic residency.
