LA CENTRAL DEL CIRC – SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR RESEARCH AND CREATION

This open call divides the residencies offered by La Central into different categories or creative transits around two core ideas:

- RESEARCH TRANSITS focused on research and/or experimentation (Essential research, Incubator Residencies, Collective Experimentation Labs and Dynamic Residencies);

- CREATION TRANSITS aimed at companies or collectives currently at the start, middle or end of a process of creation (‘In Study’, ‘In Production’ and ‘Preview’ residencies).

Each category is conceived as a creative stage and responds to the needs occasioned by the various different moments in a project’s development.

For further information, consult the open call rules.

Residency Period

The residencies for selected projects can be carried out between August 2019 and August 2020. More concrete dates will be decided with companies according to availability of spaces.

Arts Discipline

Circus

Research Transit: At source: Essential Research

This is a piece of research undertaken alone, without either input from other individuals or any aim of creating material for a completed piece. This category offers resources for starting a project – addressing questions – while examining in details the particular languages and discourses of the circus art to achieve a better understanding without having to bring anything concrete into existence.

This residency hopes to be a setting for focus and to stimulate reflection with the future desire of living and working with more freedom; of being able to find oneself in life without academic conditioning, of being free from dogmas of repetition, norms of execution, repertoire, tendencies or times of creation and production; of observing and evolving in unique ways in a tangible interrelation with the world.

One project will be selected from among all those that are submitted in this category.

Target Candidates

Individual contemporary circus artists or duos from Spain or overseas who wish to begin a serious research project of medium or long duration, without any purpose of production or exhibition.

Being a basic start to a piece of research, it will be a huge advantage if the research themes, practices or objects have not yet been started or addressed by the artist.

Based on its context and starting points, the selected artist will carry out research periods of 1 or 2 weeks through a whole year. The backing of La Central will be arranged in line with a timetable and protocol to be decided with the artist.

Conditions

The selected project will be given:

  • access to a creation room for 4 to 6 weeks (over 3 or more research periods);
  • a minimum grant of 900€* aimed at covering travel and dietary costs (an expenses account or invoice will not be required). In the case of an artist whose tax residency is outside Spain, there will be a deduction from this amount of the corresponding taxes by the different taxation systems;
  • arts monitoring and backing from La Central del Circ.

* Amount for a company made up of one individual and a residency of 4 weeks. The final amount will be calculated based on the number of members in the company who are participating in the residency and the number of weeks completed during the residency.

Research Transit: At source: Dynamic Residency

As part of the ‘At source’ research transit, dynamic residencies can be viewed as a space for experimenting, showcasing, injecting energy and dynamism and sharing moments of investigation and comparison around a particular theme with the participation of a non-circus art or discipline.

One project will be selected from among all those that are submitted to this open call.

Target Candidates

Circus artists or companies from Spain and overseas who:

  • are developing a research project
  • and would like to be involved with a specialist from another discipline (arts or otherwise) around a particular theme, to share and research without and production purpose, but with a strong dimension of encounter and dialogue.

It is essential that a minimum of two individuals take part in this residency (one of whom comes from a non-circus discipline).

As a result, the residency will be a moment of encounter with other disciplines that will intervene to inspire the research. This encounter may come about in a variety of ways, left to the imagination of the artist and their needs.

By way of example, previous dynamic residencies have seen the participation of professionals from the world of photography, choreography, university or science research, lyric song, music, etc.

Conditions

Each selected project will be given:

  • access to a creation room for 2 weeks;
  • a minimum grant of 700€* aimed at covering travel and dietary costs (an expenses account or invoice will not be required). In the case of an artist whose tax residency is outside Spain, there will be a deduction from this amount of the corresponding taxes by the different taxation systems;

At the end of the residency, it is anticipated that there will be an opportunity to share the research carried out, either as an open rehearsal or in any other format.

* Amount for a project involving the continued presence of 2 individuals. The final amount will be linked to the number of members taking part.

Creation Transits: ‘In Study’ Transit

This residency format is geared towards the needs of companies and artists at the start of a creation.

The aim is to produce a short form piece of 20-minute sketch.

Target Candidates

Residencies aimed at artists, duos or new circus companies that have just committed to starting the creation process of a new project and want to begin dedicating time to its development.

Residencies focused, for preference, on companies from Catalonia and Spain, albeit applications can be received from companies from across Europe.

Conditions

The selected project will be given:

  • access to a creation room for 4 to 6 weeks *;
  • a minimum grant of 800€** aimed at covering travel and dietary costs (an expenses account or invoice will not be required). In the case of an artist whose tax residency is outside Spain, there will be a deduction from this amount of the corresponding taxes by the different taxation systems;
  • arts monitoring and backing in terms of production/contracting from La Central del Circ.

At the end of the residency, it is anticipated that there will be a performance of the project as part of an open rehearsal, to which may be invited the ‘Espais Còmplices’ of La Central, a grouping of spaces and festivals with an interest in the monitoring and programme scheduling of contemporary circus pieces.

* For some selected projects in the ‘IN STUDY’ or ‘IN PROCUCTION’ categories there is a chance to participate in the “Residències Encreuades” [“Cross-Residencies”] programme.

** Amount for a company of one person and a residency of three weeks. The final amount will be calculated based on the number of members in the company who are participating in the residency, the number of weeks completed during the residency and other means of support for the project.

Creation Transit: ‘In Production’ Transit

This type of residency is aimed at companies and artists that are finishing the creation of a piece longer than 20 minutes.

Target Candidates

‘In Production’ residencies are envisaged for companies with an already-defined project and who are working in a long form of more than 20 minutes on which they want to focus over the coming months.

Residencies focused, for preference, on companies from Catalonia and Spain, albeit applications can be received from companies from across Europe.

Conditions

The selected project will be given:

  • access to a creation room for 3 to 6 weeks *;

If the committee deem it appropriate, it may propose to some of the projects submitted the “Micro-Residency” format, short residencies without financial assistance.

An agreement will be drawn up between each project and La Central del Circ. La Central del Circ reserves the right to declare any category in the open call null and void.
