Residency Features

The workshops available are between 30 and 35m2 in size.

The monthly rent is 130€ for individual artists and 200€ for arts collectives (maximum of 3 artists).

A deposit of 180€ must be paid, which will be returned at the end of the residency.

Prices include internet, electricity, water and supplies.

These residencies will allow for the use of communal spaces and services provided by La Escocesa, among which are included a communal kitchen, various polyvalent spaces, computer, sound and video equipment and a self-publishing workshop with a risograph machine.

Resident associates will have the chance to opt for experimentation and arts research grants on offer, as well as the international development grants. They will also be given the opportunity to take part in projects and exhibitions organised by La Escocesa.

Arts projects developed under the rubric of a residency can count on the backing of the centre’s technical team, in particular from a production assistant, and will be able to take advantage of monitoring and advice from a project team.

La Escocesa will strive to integrate the arts projects developed at the centre into the arts and cultural networks, as well as engage in promotion and dissemination of artists’ work through the relevant channels of communication.

Following the centre’s associative management model, residents selected from the current round of applications will become associates of the EMA Associació d’idees (which manages the space) and, as such, will commit to taking part in internal coordination meetings as well as activities proposed by the centre.

Non-payment of the monthly quotas and continuous absence from the venue, as well as non-compliance of duties as resident associate, may be reasons for cessation of the period of residency.

Target Candidate

The competition for residencies is open to any visual artist with no distinction of nationality, origin or current residency. In the case of arts collectives, these must be composed of a maximum of three members.

Conditions

La Escocesa is an arts residency centre that also sees itself as a community arts venture, which means that its members develop their own work while at the same time contributing to the development of this collective project. For this reason, selection of candidates will be based not only on artistic quality but also motivations for wishing to form part of the project.

Candidates may apply for more than one category in this round of residencies.

To achieve a balance between new residents and the centre’s history and rules of association, this call for applicants will be awarding 20% of the workshops internally, destined exclusively for artists who are already associates of the EMA Associació d’idees.

Assessment Criteria

For the selection process, the committee will mainly bear in mind the artist’s trajectory and the interest in the project under development during the period of residency. However, consideration will also be given to the candidate’s motivation and the level of interest in taking part in the associative project supported by the centre.

In the case of the two-year residencies, an in-person interview might be requested to assess the level of commitment to the Escocesa project.

Selection

The selection committee for internal applicants will be made up of five members: three professionals from the visual arts sector outside the centre, a representative of the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona and the Director of La Escocesa. In the case of external applicants, two members currently working as resident artists at La Escocesa will be added to the above-mentioned committee.

Application Submission

To enter the current round of residencies, applicants must submit a correctly-completed registration form, in which are detailed: the candidate’s reasons for applying, a description of the project to be developed, an artist’s CV and a personal statement. With this documentation must be attached a dossier summarising the artistic trajectory of the applicant. If the material needs to be submitted in audio or video format, links must be included in a separate part of the dossier.

All documentation must be sent via email to convocatories@ laescocesa.org, under the heading “residències 2019”. The email must contain two pdf files, one equivalent to the application form and the other for the artist dossier. In neither case must the size of the email exceed 15Mb.

At the same time, a paper copy of all documentation must be submitted. This can be sent by certified mail to La Escocesa (Pere IV, 345. 08020 Barcelona) or can be handed over in person at the centre from Tuesday to Friday, 10am-2pm.

Proposals will be accepted until 20 December 2018 at 1pm. To enter the selection process correctly, proposals must be send by email and conventional post before the date and time specified. Entry of paper documents will be based on the date on the postmark.
