PLAYWRITING RESIDENCY AT SALA BECKETT (2018/19 SEASON)
The resident will become part of the centre’s artistic team and will participate in the activities of Sala Beckett/Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia.
The residency is part of Sala Beckett’s Author in Residence programme, through which a playwright joins the artistic team of the centre and becomes involved, for a season (from September to July), with the decisions and activities that are carried out.
The chosen playwright will assume the task of writing a new work specifically for the occasion, which will be produced by Sala Beckett and premiered at the venue during the season following the residency.
The financial remuneration, which includes writing the play, is €7,000 gross.

Terms
The specific programme of activities that the playwright commits to during their residency includes:
- Writing a play during the 2018–2019 season, in accordance with the terms agreed upon with the directors of Sala Beckett regarding writing schedules, number of actors required, size of the production, etc.
- Participation in the meetings of Sala Beckett’s programming, guidance and artistic decision-making bodies during the residency. This includes the following bodies: a) the Thought and Debate Committee (Pausa); b) the Reading Committee; and c) the Programming Committee.
- Committing to writing at least two reading sheets every month (assessing the texts and projects that are consistently received at the centre).
- Being available to deliver courses and workshops that fit the context of Sala Beckett’s training programmes during the residency period, in exchange for the corresponding set remuneration.
- Delivering a lesson to a group of children from the Pere IV School.
- Participating in meetings, round tables and other activities related to contemporary playwriting at the theatre and other spaces, either for free or for the corresponding fee of each event.
- Advising and supporting the artistic teams responsible for the theatre’s productions and its Creation Laboratories through each of their creation processes during the residency season.
Assessment criteria
The assessment will pay specific attention to the relevance and artistic quality of the proposal outlined on the application form for the piece that will be written during the residency, however the proposal does not necessarily have to be the same as what is ultimately written by the playwright during their stay.
Selection
The selection of the playwright who will take up the residency will be performed by a committee made up of the artistic direction team from Sala Beckett, with collaboration from the director of Pausa magazine, the current season’s resident playwright, and the president of the Board of Patrons of Fundació Sala Beckett with a selection of its members.
Application process
Applicants must provide:
- A CV detailing their career (including premieres, publications, awards, etc.). It is compulsory for applicants to have released at least two plays in the professional scene.
- A motivation letter explaining why they are applying for this opportunity.
- A written description of a potential play that the author intends to write during the residency.
