Residencies for Visual Arts and Image Projects at Roca Umbert
Roca Umbert is a cultural space at the service of creative processes, arts training and dialogue between the arts which emphasises working in partnership with the emerging arts network, particularly in the contexts of the image as a tool of creation and the transmission of knowledge.
L'Espai d'Arts (The Arts Space) is the section of Roca Umbert that manages the programme of creation, production and contemporary dissemination within the visual arts and/or other related disciplines.

Target Candidates
The selection process is addressed to individuals and entities – artists, collectives and associations – with an arts project-in-process in the field of the visual arts and the image or related disciplines and which requires a work space for completion.
Beneficiaries who have already completed a residency at Roca Umbert may submit a new project unless they have received two or more notifications for non-observance of the centre’s rules and regulations.
Residency Aims
Development of a creative project of a given length with the support of Roca Umbert in the form of space, advice and monitoring, and which involves a return to the community and sharing experiences with other resident artists.
Roca Umbert will arrange and promote conferences, meetings and individual or group work or continuous training sessions with the members of the selection committee as well as theoretical advice from artist and Roca Umbert adviser, Joan Fontcuberta.
Residency Categories
A_Long Term Category
- A residency in one of the Espai d’Arts’ workshop spaces of up to 2 years, with 365 days/ year, 24 hours/day free access, whether for individual or shared use.
- Recipients must bear the corresponding fees published in the price catalogue provided by the centre for residency services.
B_Short Term Category
- A residency in one of the Espai d’Arts’ workshop spaces for a period of between a minimum of one week and a maximum of three months (to be formalised in accordance with availability of work spaces).
- Recipients will not have to bear the corresponding fees published in the price catalogue provided by the centre for residency services. By way of compensation, at the end of their residency they will have to present a work-in-progress and/or a workshop with public access.
Features and Workshop Prices
The workshop spaces available are:
- Workshop 1 (52.11m2): 80 €+ VAT monthly (shared)*
- Workshop 2 (32.94 m2): 60 €+ VAT monthly (shared)*
- Workshop 3 (34.58 m2): 50 €+ VAT monthly individual and/or shared
- Workshop 4 (33.12 m2): 50 €+ VAT monthly individual and/or shared
- Workshop 5 (30.36 m2): 50 €+ VAT monthly individual and/or shared
- Workshop 7 (29.33m2): 50 €+ VAT monthly individual and/or shared
* Shared workshop spaces can be for collectives or artists willing to share a space; in the latter case, the price of the space will be divided between occupants.* The centre reserves the right to propose shared use of space if it deems it appropriate.
Services Included
- Basic cleaning of shared and non-exclusive use areas and maintenance of infrastructure
- Access control to the facility
- Wifi zone
- Office zone: fridge, microwave and coffee maker
- Communal zone with work tables and various tools
- Access to kiln, A3 printing press, communal space for tool cleaning, a potter’s wheel and dark room with contact copier for screen printing

Conditions
Residents Obligations
- Compliance with the Roca Umbert rules and regulations and the specific equipment regulation (see annex 2 at open call).
- For the long term category, an annual report of the project in development will be submitted one month before the end of the contract and regular weekly meetings (or whenever they are convened) will be held with the management team of l’Espai d’Arts de Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts SL. Non-submission of the report will be cause for termination of the contract.
- The project developed during the residency must be identified as a cultural product with the trademark “made at Roca Umbert” in its dissemination, press releases and/or project promotional materials. Roca Umbert will hold the exhibition and public communication rights of the images with the aim of promoting, disseminating and documenting the residency without temporal or territorial limits. All submitted dossiers will then form part of the document archive of the Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts.
- Inform the Roca Umbert Espai d'Arts management team of the project’s state of progress if presentations, exhibitions or grant submissions are developed with other centres.
- Participate in the diverse activities the centre may propose, understood as a constitutive part of their own residency.
- Participate in the annual open doors day organised by Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts.
Assessment Criteria
- Projects linked to one or more of Roca Umbert’s conceptual interests (2 points)
- Projects linked to the image as a tool of creation and transmission of knowledge (3 points)
- Projects that promote connections with the region (1 point)
- Creators who haven’t completed a residency at Roca Umbert over the last calendar year (1 point)
- Quality of the artist’s overall project and the specific project being submitted (3 points)
Selection
The committee selecting projects will comprise:
- A technician from Roca Umbert’s coordination office
- A representative of the company responsible for the management and revitalisation of the visual and plastic arts at Roca Umbert
- Joan Fontcuberta, artist and arts advisor at Roca Umbert
- Frederic Montornès, independent curator
- Alexandra Laudo, independent curator

Documentation to be submitted (compulsory):
- Application form (see annex I at open call)
- Photocopy of proof of identity (DNI or passport)
- Dossier of the project to be developed during the residency. This dossier must include (maximum 1 200 words):
- Title, name, conceptualisation and project description with visual documentation and reference to previous completed works
- Timetable and/or work plan of the submitted project, in which the length of the residency is specified.
- Proposal of how the project will give something tangible back to Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts
