From waste to resource

In the garbage dumps we can take all those waste that we cannot throw in the containers that we find in the street. Using them we help to convert waste into new resources and help to preserve the environment.

The AMB (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona) has recently edited the Guide of metropolitan waste collection centers. Each residue, in its place. In this guide, we can see what collection centers are, how they work, what waste we can carry and what their destination is beyond the collection centers.

As an example, it is made of ...

Sprays and aerosols: Tecnología Medio Ambiente (TMA) takes care of the full containers and moves them to its facilities in order to regroup them. Once classified, they are sent to the company Reyval, which will handle the liquids and recover the materials of the containers, mainly metallic, but also of plastic and glass. To recycle aerosols and spirals, they are first dismantled. The residual liquid and the vessel are treated by thermodestruction. On the one hand, residual butane is filtered and the alcohol obtained is redistilled and titrated. On the other hand, the remaining materials are separated, crushed and sold to third parties as raw materials to manufacture new products.

Bottles of cava: The majority of the bottles of cava collected in the garbage dumps are sent directly to the recoverers, who classify and clean them so that they can be reused. Maria Nutó is the company that is responsible for treating and recovering them in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

Small electronic devices: Electrorecycling is in charge of recycling this waste. To treat them, it separates the different components (plastics and metals) and recovers them as raw materials that will be used to make new products.

Small computer and telecommunication equipment: The manager of the computer and telephone equipment collected in the garbage dumps of the Metropolitan Area is Electrorecycling. Generally, to recycle them, the different materials that compose the equipment are first identified and separated, then crushed and finally each material is sent to various companies that recover them as raw materials to make new products. With Decree 110/2015, electrical and electronic waste is regulated in accordance with European Directives.

Single-dose aluminum capsules: The company Prointraval separates the coffee scraps, herbs and cocoa from the capsules. Organic matter is made composite and the capsules are melted to make new aluminum objects.
